My favorite (and well-used) fleece or puffy jacket will always remind me of certain backpacking trips in the Sierras, or favorite climbs in Yosemite. Gear becomes attached to specific memories and stories, the same way that a certain song can conjure up memories of middle school. That’s something that a shiny new parka will never provide. Yesterday, instead of lining up at midnight for the Black Friday frenzy and buying new stuff, I decided to take a different approach. I first went with my friend Emily Y. 15 to a Worn Wear gear swap hosted by the local Patagonia (you may have heard of their prominent anti-Black Friday ads). Comparitive Analysis of Power and Control in Equus and Gattaca - Literature Essay Samples

Equus and Gattaca correspond in their development of similar ideas surrounding the societal and behavioral connections between power and control, although Shaffer and Niccol differ in their approach to these concepts through filmic and theatrical techniques. Both Gattaca and Equus explore the influence and control of divine higher powers through the utilization of sound motifs. In the play, the Equus noise becomes a prevalent auditory feature produced from the choric effect of humming, thumping and stamping while serving to indicate the presence of â€Å"Equus the God†. These aural devices emphasize the deity’s power with a foreboding and provocative effect, increasing in intensity when his influence over Alan escalates. Similarly, the Gattaca organisation in Niccol’s film demonstrates the divine powers granted to scientists, with a presence that looms over the characters like an ever-observing god. The constant background announcements over the Gattaca public address system, serves to remind the audience of this dictatorial authority, reinforcing the influence and involvement of the corporation in the actions of the robot-like employees. Alternatively, Shaffer draws on allusions to Equine dominance to further enforce the concept of a transcendent power. This is particularly evident when Dora refers to horses in a religious context directly quoting the bible with â€Å"The glory of his nostrils is terrible!† as Alan mimics â€Å"He swallows the ground with fierceness and rage!† These references illustrate the horse as a powerful being, a notion that grows and metastasizes to form a god in Alan’s mind, as he seeks to harness this power. Shaffer also uses selective language to emphasize Equus as a symbol of pure force, as Alan’s descriptions focus on physical strength with words such as â€Å"big† and â€Å"huge† in association with his attention to powerful body parts like â€Å"hooves†, â€Å"flank† and â€Å"neck†. In contrast, Niccol utilizes angled shots to convey which characters posses the power in specific situations. This can be seen during the open ing flashback scene; a high angle shot of Vincent as a young child on the floor depicts the character as weak and vulnerable, ironically due to his DNA reflected by the double helix model he is happily playing with, while the succeeding mid shot conveys the scientist as a dominant authority looking down on Vincent with the godlike ability to manipulate genetics. Whilst the protagonists of both texts are faced with the dominance of these divine authorities, Shaffer and Niccol simultaneously utilize character development to examine the complex shifts in power with relation to gaining or losing it at the hands of another. In the dystopian world of Gattaca, having the perfect genetic identity ensures success; in this way Eugene symbolically transfers his own power to Vincent when detaching himself from his first name insisting that Vincent call him â€Å"Eugene† rather than â€Å"Jerome†. This signifies the moment when Vincent takes control of his destiny, claiming the power that Eugene offers, with the composition of the shot conveying this transfer as the differences in height emphasize how Vincent is instantly superior to â€Å"Eugene†. Conversely, Shaffer establishes a connection based on sexual dominance between Alan and Equus, which explores how power can be gained from the act of controlling. Riding a horse is portray ed as a sexualized experience as Alan mentions intricate details describing â€Å"the way their necks twist, and sweat shines in the folds†. This sexual association stems from the power Alan feels when riding Equus, as he receives gratification from the thrill of commanding his own god and bending the strength of the horse to his will, observing how he had â€Å"all that power going any way [he] wanted†. Although both Alan and Vincent gain a sense of power from their relationships, Shaffer and Niccol additionally examine how this can lead to lack of control. In Gattaca, slow montages integrated with close up fade in shots focus on the meticulous effort needed to maintain the facade of a genetically superior, and therefore powerful, man. In terms of Mis-en-scene elements, Vincent adopts a completely new, clean and dull style, seen in monotone suits with slick combed hair. This demonstrates how Vincent becomes so disciplined to the Gattaca expectations, that while he is secretly defying societal rules, he is still under their influence and lacks power of choice in every day life. After sleeping with Irene, Vincent’s assumed power clashes with his disciplined submissiveness as he loses control of both his DNA and his professional life. Niccol forms a nostalgic connection between this moment of weakness and Vincent’s past through the melancholy theme song, sepia color hues and beach setting. Vincent is exposed both metaphorically and physically, positioning the audience to realize that he has more control over his own life when he lives as his â€Å"invalid self†. In this way, the director implies that while Vincent’s new identity gives him the power to pursue his dream, it only provides the illusion of control. Similar to Gattaca, Alan also experiences the loss of control following a sexual encounter, committing the â€Å"crime† when provoked by Equus after kissing Jill in the stables. The stage movement plays an important role in the depiction of Alan’s weakness in this scene, as the horses trample around while he desperately leaps at them, jumping high and naked in the dark, slashing at their heads. The chaos created by these movements accentuated with lighting signifies the disorder of Alan’s own mind, as he completely loses control at the hands of Equus with, like Vincent on the beach, his physical and mental vulnerabilities exposed. The violence of the crime connects with Alan’s pursuit of power as recognized earlier in the play when he claims he â€Å"had to† master his god. This captures the reinforced idea of a â€Å"Godslave† as Alan is occasionally the master of Equus while constantly being subject to his higher power. Ultimately, the intricate connections between the characters in Gattaca and Equus allow the authors to explore the influence of power and control, with the possession of these qualities continually shifting according to experiences and relationships.

We as humans have an important role to play when confronted with an issue which is in any way concerned with our relationship to nature. Although we coexist on this planet with numerous other species of life, ours is the only one whose decisions can potentially have a significant influence on the status quo of the delicate system that is Earth. Our attitudes and connections towards nature are important because they directly affect how we will realize the goal of sustainability. Nonetheless, in order to begin this task we must first ascertain what it is exactly that we are working with. Patient Profile Joanne And Steve Wanted A C Section

Patient profile: Joanne and Steve wanted a C-section as they had difficultly delivery with their first child; however Joanne went into labour early. The baby was delivered 3 days before the C-section was scheduled. With her first child she was given an epidural that did not work, this is why she had requested the C-section for the birth of this child. Their first child died at 21 days old, he was an IVF baby and it had taken them 5-6 years to get him. After a couple of years they started trying for another baby, they had been saving up for more IVF but they managed to conceive naturally. They had more scans during this pregnancy to ensure the health of the baby was okay. Barriers to communication: She was given air by the midwives to help her with the pain as she had been experiencing contractions since 8:00 AM. Family Lifestyle and the behavior of members within the family have been shown to have a direct affect on a teenagers behavior everywhere. Any older person, especially a family member, can influence a child very easily because he always looks up to that family member. If a person in the family is involved in a criminal activity then the children can be turned on by this and become interested in doing the same thing. If the guardian or parent of a teenager does not punish him for doing something wrong, this can only lead to repetition of the bad behavior. Failure to stop a child from doing something wrong could lead the child to believe that his behavior is acceptable. According to my network plan, it consists of 5 rooms in a 8000 square foot main room that is entire section of library. According to my network plan, the rooms in the Library are partitioned into various parts including a computer lab, one administrative office, an equipment room, main library area and a lobby. The main area contains bookshelves and desks for studying and other uses. I have proposed that the administrative room include all administrative officers of the university in library section. All administrative works are dine from that administrative office. The library management of the university has been a project that needs to be implemented in the university. I have included a computer lab that helps in storing all the equipment related to the computer system. Network plan According to my network plan, I have installed twenty-six workstations, three network printers and one administrative workstations. In main area of library, there include a workstations, network printer and Wi-Fi access point. According to me, this might help in maintaining the inherent access all over the library area. As per my network plan, there is one desktop pc with a printer in admin office for monitoring other rooms in the library area. The Wi-Fi access point in Lobby include 26 workstations that help in circulating internet all over the library area. A network printer is installed in the lobby for connecting all the 26 workstations with all routers, switches and servers. According to my plan, all the rooms in the library area is connected with Wi-Fi access. Design Features According to my plan, design features has been installed in each room of the library area. Equipment room As per my plan, equipment room contains separate part where the servers, switches, firewalls and power supply are installed along with electronic interfaces. The connection to the internet has been installed in the room. The equipment room consists of all equipment that are required in the computer lab. The use of this equipment are done to protect the data and files stored in the server with the help of firewall and antivirus. A modem and firewall have been installed in the room for providing internet connection in the room. A server has been installed in the room that helps in connecting other devices with internet. An un-interruptible power supply helps in controlling shutdown in the event of a power failure. Cat 6 cabling has been installed in the system for connecting different components of the computer system. Lobby and Study/Book room According to my plan, there is only one workstation including monitor, computer and mouse. All the components are connected using the cat 6 cabling. There is only in network architecture connected with the computer that helps in connecting internet to the devices. The library management of the university has been a project that needs to be implemented in the university. The use of the modem as a wireless access point helps in connecting devices those do not have wired connection to internet. These devices can connect with the wireless access point connection for accessing internet. The lobby consists of internet connection in all parts of the room rising the wires access points. Modems are unstacked in the room in order to provide internet at each corner of the lobby. Administrative Office According to my plan, the administrative manager office include a laptop workstation and various multifunction printers that can work under wireless environment. This room helps in maintaining different administrative works in the library. This room consists of a desktop that contains all information of students and officers of the university. The computer will be connected with the help of the Cat 6 cabling process. This help in accessing internet through connection for the modem and server. The network printer helps in printing various documents requested by the students and officers. The administrative office contains several parameters that are useful for maintaining and administrating overall system of the library management. Computer lab The computer lab is consists of twenty-five workstations for students for using learning activities. However, each workstations consists of computer, keyboard and mouse. These twenty-five workstations are connected with each other that helps in transferring data and information for one workstation to another. I have included a computer lab that helps in storing all the equipment related to the computer system. The computer lab consists of different computer system in which students used to access computers for educational and exam purposes. The use of the computer done for educating themselves in a proper manner and maintaining a proper educational environment in the library. Therefore, I have focused more on this room and installed all the twenty-five workstations in this room. Therefore, the speed of internet is increased in this room. The use of the high-speed internet can be used for surfing and downloading study materials by the students within less time. The use of the computer lab provides various environment on order to study online books and articles related to knowledge. These devices are connected with the Cat 6 cabling wire that helps in maintaining the speed of the transferring data and information. It also contains one administrative workstation that helps in monitoring other workstation from it. There is a network printer connected that helps in printing any documents and information required by administrative officers and students.

All the branches of Westecs ® are well festooned and the environment is comfortable and rich. Westecs ® provide a special importance to the customer satisfaction. Almost all kinds of wear that the customers need are found here. They have a future vision to extend their business by exporting their garment products abroad. This assessment of problem is needed specially when there is a discrepancy between some current state of affairs and some desired state, requiring the consideration of alternative courses of action. Westecs ® Ltd. is one of the largest chain clothing stores in Bangladesh. To get this achievement they have maintained certain management policies and practiced some theories to make it an effective and efficient organization though Westecs ® do not have any formal Human Resource department. In spite of all plans and strategies there are some loopholes in every organization. Westecs ® is running their business in somewhat successful manner but there are many problems especially with the Human Resource management such as productivity, skills and personal attributes, employee morale, innovations and training and development- in which sectors they have a lot of opportunities to improve. Here are some problems of Westecs ®, which are effecting in different aspects. These problems are related to recruitment and selection process, productivity, motivation, pay for performance, absenteeism, turnover, organizational citizenship behavior, job satisfaction, skills, training and development etc. Development in these sections may lead Westecs ® to better productivity and success. 1. Productivity An organization meant to be productive when it achieves its goals and does so by transferring inputs to outputs at the lowest cost. This productivity also implies a concern for both effectiveness and efficiency. By effective, we mean making the right decision and successfully implementing them. The organizational goals that Westecs ® have are- These goals are not specific and difficult rather they are more generalized. To measure the efficiency level, there are some other factors needed to take into account, such as absenteeism, turnover, organizational citizenship behavior, job satisfaction etc. 1. 2 Absenteeism Absenteeism is the failure to report to work and it causes a huge cost and disruption for the employers. In Westecs ® the absenteeism rate is relatively low. The employees are given altogether 30 days of leave in a year. Though absence have a negative impact on the organization, but Westecs ® consider the situation when employees do not come for illness, fatigue or excess stress. If it is within the allowed 30days leave a year and the employee feels sick Westecs ® does not pressurize their employees to come to the job if they feel sick or excess stress. Because the management of Westecs ® believes that a sick or stressed person can not put his/her 100% attention to their job rather they perform poorly, which in turn may bring poor service to the customer and increase customer dissatisfaction-that finally will impede the image of the organization as a whole. So Westecs ® is efficient enough to manage their absenteeism. 3. Turnover Turnover is the voluntary or involuntary permanent withdrawal from an organization. Westecs ® faces a relatively high turnover rate. This high rate of turnover results in increased recruiting, selection and training cost. In addition, this high rate of turnover also disrupt the efficient running of an organization when knowledge and experienced personnel leave and replacements must be found and prepared to assume positions of responsibility. Westecs ® failed to efficiently manage this high turnover rate. 4. Organizational Citizenship Behavior Organizational Citizenship Behavior (OCB) is a discretionary behavior that is not a part of employee’s formal job requirements, but that nevertheless promotes the effective functioning of the organization. To become a successful organization, it needs employees who will do more then their usual job duties and provides performance that is beyond expectations. The outlet staffs and factory workers get a good starting salary which is around tk. 3000 to tk. 4000 and there is a year to year increment. The branch manager, sales manager, finance manager all get a reasonable salary. In addition, all the employees get yearly tk. 5000 for medical expense. They also obtain incentives which include festival bonus two times a year. Women are given 66 days maternity leave with pay. From these extra benefits and advantages which the employees are getting, they feel that their pay rates are equitable and fair. But Westecs does not increase the salary of the employees on the performance basis. It rather focuses on seniority. 2. 5 Leadership role of managers Leadership is the ability to influence a group toward the achievement of goals. Brach managers, factory managers, supervisors and other associated managers of Westecs serve as a leader towards achieving the goals of the organization. The managers advise many potential and useful instructions that the employees carry out efficiently. The employees have to stay almost all day long in the outlets that becomes no longer challenging for them. It increases boredom and reduces motivation. Thus the job turns into a dull and uninteresting one for the employees as they suffer from overroutinization of their work. There is no real arrangement of amusement for the employees in the organization. For example, there is no opportunity of job rotation for the employees.
